Notable preparation options for the GMAT
The decision to obtain a higher degree is often a difficult one. It involves research, preparation, and large financial commitments. Last week we talked about the process of preparing for your GREs, and if you've decided that business school is the direction you'd like to go in, the same rules apply.
However, business schools often standardize the application process a bit more than Arts & Sciences departments, and this means that the GMAT is a key component of the application. While it's only one part of the admissions process, it can be the difference between acceptance or rejection. According to Business Week, 55% of MBA admissions officers who participated in the 2008 Kaplan Business School Survey said the GMAT is the most important part of the application.
It is paramount to make your application as competitive as possible to ensure that you can get into the best program available, and that means preparation.
Although the GMAT, like the GRE, can be intimidating, there are bountiful resources available to help you obtain for an optimal score. In addition, many test-prep companies have recently worked to improve their programs and online materials in order to appeal to a wide range of individuals with varying needs, restrictions, and learning styles. Here is a short list of some test prep companies and what they offer:
Kaplan offers a number of prep options and services. Though Kaplan does not specialize in the GMAT alone, they have an abundance of experience and a high success rate.
Knewton is an all-online company, which makes it convenient for those with a more rigid schedule.
Manhattan GMAT is a prep option designed for those who want to attend the most competitive schools, and the company invests plenty of capital on top-notch instructors who lead very rigorous courses. If you're eager to put in time, effort, and money to reap the best results, this is a great option for you.
Manhattan Review has shorter courses, anywhere from 4-8 weeks. This is a great option for people who are very busy but still have the self-motivation to get the work done on their own. It's also a little pricey, which is important to keep in mind.
Princeton Review has many locations and experience. Like Kaplan, a number of test-prep services are available to fit different ways of learning.
Veritas Prep is best for people who thrive in a classroom setting. It is also one of the pricier options.
We wish you the best of luck with the GMAT and your business school applications, and encourage you to start preparing ahead of time!
