The New York Times has been covering the job market in higher education heavily in recent weeks.  A quote from a recent article sums up the situation with a disturbing visual: “This is a year of no jobs,” said Catherine Stimpson, the dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at New York University. "Ph.D.s are stacked up," she said, “like planes hovering over LaGuardia.”

It will be increasingly imperative that graduates do all they can to differentiate application materials from the the hundreds and sometimes thousands of other candidates. See our previous post on developing a personal brand in higher ed for some tips on how you can make your credentials stand out.

I thought I had that but someone in my field HATED my CV. It perhaps looked more like a resume and I tend to use my home info rather than non-permanent employers. I only had my first interview a few weeks ago and so far haven't heard anything. And my current employer seems to have wanted me gone once they opted to torpedo me as an "inside job candidate." I guess they don't want me to show up the newly-minted PhD they've hired. (Someone did get a job -- just not me. So much for the "job freeze.")

There is no doubt that these are difficult times for the majority of industries - in particular higher education. Despite this, we remain confident in the future of the PhD job market and hope to create products that help fantastic candidates really promote and apply themselves more efficiently.

We're always thinking of better ways to help our users to this end, and I encourage you to shoot me an email at mike@interfolio.com so that we can discuss what can be done to best help you.
