At Interfolio we process lots of different kinds of applications for our members.  But it is during this time of year that medical and dental school applicants need to send off their letters of recommendation to AMCAS, AADSAS, TMDSAS or individual osteopathic medical schools.

Jack has written about this subject previously, but I thought since it is the season for health professions deliveries, it warrants further discussion.  So without further delay, I will now show you how to electronically deliver your letters from Interfolio to AMCAS.

Here I will describe how applicants can deliver letters from Interfolio to AMCAS.

  1. Request and receive your confidential letters of recommendation from each professor, physician and/or softball coach from whom you require an endorsement.  Keep in mind that AMCAS requires all received documents on institutional letterhead and signature.  Rest easy though; we have the tools to allow your writers to do all of this electronically or by paper.
  2. Once your letters are received, you will log into your AMCAS account and note all of your individual AMCAS letter IDs.  You will need both this and your AMCAS applicant IDs to send your delivery successfully. The Letter ID can be found on the status page or the Letter of Evaluation/Recommendation Summary page of the AMCAS Application.
  3. Log into Interfolio, select “Start a Delivery” and type “AMCAS” in the search field. Select the result that is displayed and denote the recommendations you would like to send. Then, add your AAMC ID in Step 3 of the delivery process with one click and select “Check Out”.
  4. On the next screen, you will be prompted to enter in your AMCAS letter IDs for each corresponding recommendation letter. It’s really quick and easy.
  5. And at last, you will be shown the option to send your specified documents to AMCAS. Electronic deliveries processed before 2 pm will go out the same business day.

Once your letters are within your AMCAS application, they will be filtered down to the individual medical schools to which you are applying.

For more insight into this process or to vent about your looming deadlines, just give us a call at (202)-223-3358 or email at help@interfolio.com.

Congrats, you made it all the way to the end! Don't forget to subscribe to our blog via rss, or find us on Facebook, here.

Do I need to wait for my writers to have their letter ID, or can I get a letter from them and then attach the letter ID later?

Thanks,

Michael

You do not need to provide your letter writers with their corresponding AMCAS letter ID. Instead, you will have your writers upload their documents to Interfolio and personally attach the IDs when you are ready to send the letters to AMCAS.

This facilitates two significant improvements to the medical application process:

(1) The ability to request letters from your writers months before you deadlines and have them stored digitally until you are ready to apply.

(2) The option to reuse recommendation letters stored in your Interfolio account for future application cycles.

Thanks!

Submitting letters to AMCAS through Interfolio will not have different requirements than submitting some other way.

AMCAS says "Medical schools may require your letters to be on official letterhead and include the author's signature."

I understand that response is vague, so my recommendation would be that if at all possible try and get a letter that is signed. Letterhead is a bonus if available.

This link will bring you to the AMCAS FAQ page, where you can find out all of their requirements.

Do you send out the letters as a packet, or should I choose the "Individual" option on AMCAS.Thanks.

Hi Kellie,

Interfolio can certainly send all of your letters to AMCAS in a single delivery. Click the 'add' button next to each letter that you would like to include in the delivery, and you will be prompted to include their unique AMCAS ID numbers after clicking "Save and Check out."

Do we need to deliver the letter request form along with the actual recommendation?

When creating a delivery to AMCAS, for each letter in your delivery, you will be prompted to input the unique letter ID assigned by AMCAS. You will also be prompted to input your AMCAS user ID. These IDs will provide AMCAS with the information needed to process your letter. Because of this, you will not be required to include the AMCAS request forms when sending your letters from Interfolio.

In terms of the author's signature, can this be an electronic signature or a physical signature which is then scanned and uploaded to Interfolio?

Diana,

Either option is fine, and we will always accept a physical, signed copy of the letter as well.

A scanned and uploaded letter with a signature is fine, and if the letter writer does not have a scanner, we offer several options for them to store and use an electronic signature with their Interfolio Writer's account.

Hi, what if my review gave me a letter of recommendation, can I help him or her to upload it for AMCAS or AACOMAS?

Hi J,

AACOMAS and AMCAS require confidential letters of recommendation and it would therefore be unwise to assist your writer in uploading the letter. I recommend that your writer mail in a copy of the letter and we can upload the document on his/her behalf.

Ethan
