Teaching Portfolio

from Edward Gitre's portfolio

I am looking forward to reengaging students after this postdoctoral fellowship. In the first summer after entering Rutgers, I taught an upper-division course, solo, entitled “The Forging of Modern America, 1880-1920.” I found it eminently challenging and rewarding.

In addition to incorporating a variety of cultural sources to engage the students, I included a fieldtrip to Ellis Island and Museum, which brought history alive to many of the students—as well as to me. When at the end of the term students were asked to evaluate the course and suggest what they would do differently, one responded by writing, “Nothing.” While I would certainly make changes to improve, course evaluations from the students speak well of my potential as a teaching scholar.

Below are samples of my teaching experience, including a syllabus, teaching statement and philosophy, two assignments, as well as a teaching evaluation.
