During 2007, I worked with Steve Goldenberg, CEO of Interfolio to launch my own business. Although the venture was unsuccessful, the lessons learned are unparalleled.
Have you ever wondered what you wanted to be when you grow up? I do, and I still don't know the exact answer. I do know I want to be challenged; I know that I want to come up with an idea and watch it grow into something amazing.
I want to put together a team of people and place them in a challenging and fun environment so they realize and achieve their full potential. I want to do something that makes my customers happy...something that cures their pain and improves their lives.
And I want to do all this while having the time of my life - because, as Confucius said: "Choose work you love and you will never have to work a day in your life. "
After a week on the job at Alta Regional Center, I learned that they had so much paper on their hands, they were storing files in off-site storage facilities for a monthly fee. And the process was never ending: The more consumers Alta served, the more paperwork was generated.
After meeting with the CEO, I proposed the following solution for this problem:
In creating this proposal, I was hoping to solve two problems: 1) Create a paperless filing system while making the process far more efficient and; 2) Make the filing process amazingly easy and pleasurable for Alta Workers.
With hundreds of pages within most files, trying to file or find specific documents was a nightmare. My background with Interfolio combined with my experience as an Alta worker gave me all the tools I needed to create a superior product.
Unfortunately, the California budget (Alta is state funded) along with projects with higher priorities halted the execution of my plan in the final stages of the process.
