Boston College Career Center
from Frank Fessenden's portfolio
I served as Director of the Boston College Career Center from 1996-2000. During that time, thanks to an incredible staff, we dramatically expanded our internship program, our on-campus recruiting program, our web site, and our alumni network. We served more students than ever before.
We also played a leadership role in applying technology to career services. We were the first university career center to fully use the eRecruiting platform (eRecruiting later grew to include over 500 career centers). We also were leaders in a national online Internship network and a career information sharing consortium.
What I Did There
• Directed all functions of comprehensive university Career Center. Delivered career services to an undergraduate and graduate student population of over 11,000, as well as to alumni.
• Managed, trained and led staff of 15 career center professionals and 20 student workers.
• Prepared and monitored $800,000 budget.
• Implemented strategic planning for the Center; directed outreach to employers, students, alumni, and faculty.
• Expanded campus recruiting by over 30%.
• Established broad vision for role of technology and led comprehensive internet implementation strategies. Results included a 50% increase in utilization of services by students and alumni.
• Established collaborative university partnerships for web-based data sharing. Resulted in 400% growth in internship opportunities and job listings.
• Expanded alumni networking services over 100%.

BC Chronicle Announcing My Hire, Fall 1996
I still crack up when I read the line "establishing a home page on the World Wide Web"- for 1996 that was cutting edge! Here's another quote from article: "there are several areas he plans to address as director, including undergraduate internships and networking opportunities with alumni. The key initiative, he said, will be to scrutinize the roles technology will play in the center's mission and develop plans to meet those objectives..."Visit Website
Interview with the Boston College Chronicle
Quote from article: "The center's commitment to technology will be evident in other ways, Fessenden said, as it upgrades its computer software and adds more services and information to its World Wide Web site. Currently, the Web site offers access to several key data bases, including lists of 9,000 internships; the names of 4,000 BC alumni who have volunteered to give career advice; lists of on-campus recruiters; compilations of between 500 and 1,000 job listings that have come into the Career Center office; and links to newspaper help wanted pages across the country..."Visit Website

Quote from article: "At Boston College, [the career center] is also leading an effort to form a college consortium that will research the best Internet sites for specific job listings such as health care, consulting and the environment..."Visit Website
