Personal Design Projects
from Rachel Lehman's portfolio
Planning my own wedding gave me several opportunities to flex my design muscles, and often in ways outside my typical job description. This page highlights some images of the results. I chose a "cherry blossom" or sakura theme for our wedding, with colors inspired by them: chocolate brown and pale pink. Since Adam and I grew up in the D.C. area, we both enjoy Japanese culture, and the Sakura is an omen of good fortune, it made a perfect wedding theme.
Inspiration for Cake
I was a cake decorator before I was a UI designer, so naturally I had very strong opinions of what I wanted my cake to look like. I found a photo of an elite NY cake studio design that I loved, and created a simplified sketch that would fit my wedding size and budget. The baker did a fantastic job interpreting it, and the result is below. View Image
Finished Wedding Cake
The cake was done by Balducci's in Bethesda, it looked fantastic and tasted even better! View Image
Invitation Set
Since my wedding was small, I designed and hand made my own invitations, printing them on my desktop printer using assorted papers I rummaged for at a variety of craft shops and websites. View Image
Wedding Flowers
I also designed and assembled my own flowers which I ordered online. Although I can't say the same for the bouquets (which came out just ok, due to my lack of skill in that area and some flower issues), the centerpieces came out extremely well and everyone loved them. View Image
Sadly, cherry blossoms weren't an option for my flowers because they aren't typically available as cut flowers. So I chose calla lillies and orchids for their elegance, resilience, and availability in my desired colors!
Favors
The reception was held at an italian restaurant / martini lounge, so for favors, I had martini glasses printed with a design that included our names, theme graphics and wedding date. Each guest received a glass filled with pink and chocolate candies. View Image
