This page gives you a visual glimpse into field trips and creative projects that I've enjoyed sharing with students.

    National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum

The museum lobby memorial comprises a dog tag for every service person who died in the "conflict".

Site of First Sustained Chain Reaction

Students in Religious Values in Cultural Context (Lake Forest College) visit the site of the first sustained nuclear reaction en route to the Oriental Institute.

Spertus Museum of Judaica - Permanent Collection

The permanent collection at Spertus is shown in rotation in a large alcove, lined with tall, thin display cabinets. Our guide likened it to your grandmother's attic - albeit an extraordinarily well-furnished and documented attic.

Spertus Museum of Judaica - Open Public Space

In addition to the permanent collection and short-term exhibits, the striking Spertus Institute building is itself a powerful text. For more information, follow the link I've provided here.

    Alternative Projects

I encourage students to pursue a variety of options - either as alternatives for required assignments or for extra credit - that tap into their interests and individual learning and communication styles. Among my favorite projects, which sadly I cannot reproduce here, were sketch pad-journals that students used to respond to course materials and discussions. The art and creative writing majors especially enjoyed this medium, but in fact many different kinds of students employed it effectively.

    Memorial Rocks on Aruban Beach

One of my great pleasures is plumbing contexts in which I find myself for illustrations that will bring religion and religious belief alive for my students.
