Tonya Howe

Assistant Professor of Literature

Dr. Howe received her Ph.D. in 2005 from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she studied eighteenth-century British literature and culture. Her dissertation, "'A Monster with a Face Between His Feet': The Corporeal Culture of Farce in Early Eighteenth-Century Britain," received the Michael Erik Myatt Distinguished Dissertation Award in Disability Studies. Dr. Howe specializes in early modern English literature and culture, focusing in performance studies and popular art, and the digital humanities. She is currently working on an essay about the performance art of early contortionists and posture-masters, and she recently published an essay about using technology in the study and teaching of literature. She is also mired in the long, ongoing process of revising her dissertation for publication. After a visiting Assistant Professorship at Washington and Lee University in 2005, she began teaching at Marymount.
