With so many types of cloud computing services available today, including private and public cloud services, it is easy to become overwhelmed with the abundance of information available about cloud services, especially for those who work in an IT-related role.

Because making a wrong purchasing decision can present many challenges later on, it is important to know what to consider when deciding which cloud services service to invest in.

In the article “Multiple Choice: How to Mix and Match Cloud Services” published in EdTech, several best practices regarding cloud service solutions are discussed.

  • Identity management: To keep cloud services manageable and secure, identity management is necessary. Make sure that basic enterprise infrastructure is in place. Because much data needs to be shared among multiple computer systems, single sign-on, along with common passwords and credentials, need to be considered.
  • Prevent duplication: A strong IT governance plan and business requirements, along with IT managers engaging early on in the decision process, will help identify and prevent redundant and inappropriate solutions from being considered.
  • Outsourcing services: Determine which services within your institution should reside on the cloud, and which ones can be managed internally. Be sure to consider budgets and available resources when evaluating options.
